SUMMARY: Under general supervision, performs a variety of law enforcement work associated with patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

h Certification as Law Enforcement Officer from AZ POST REQUIRED

h Valid Arizona driver’s license

h Ability to serve our community with courtesy and respect

h Requires availability to work flexible schedule

h Bilingual in Spanish a plus

h San Luis residency preferred

POLICE OFFICER

 

SUMMARYUnder general supervision, performs a variety of law enforcement work associated with patrol, traffic enforcement, and investigations.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.  This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.)

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

-        Enforces laws and ordinances, maintains order, protects life and property, investigates crimes, and assists in crime prevention activities;

-        Patrols assigned areas, responds to calls for assistance, and takes appropriate action;

-        Controls and restrains potentially violent persons;

-        Investigates suspicious conditions, activities, or persons;

-        Assists other law enforcement agencies and provides needed backup when requested;

-        Participates in rescue activities for sick and injured persons;

-        Arrests, transports, and books violators and escorts prisoners to jail or court;

-        Serves warrants, subpoenas, and other court orders;

-        Prepares detailed reports of felony and misdemeanor crimes as well as criminal and civil traffic complaints;

-     Conducts investigations of criminal cases and gathers, preserves, and analyzes facts and evidence;

-     Conducts interviews and interrogations and records statements and testimony;

-        Collects, prepares, and submits evidence for analysis, processing, or retention;

-        Prepares material evidence and documentation for courtroom presentations and testifies in court as required;

-     Provides information to attorneys and other authorized personnel;

-        Participates in special enforcement details or special operations;

-     Promotes crime prevention programs at local schools and within the community.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

 

Knowledge of:

-     law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures;

-        applicable Federal/State/local laws and ordinances;

-        investigative methods and analysis techniques;

-        preservation of evidence and its admission into court;

-     standard rules and regulations of a law enforcement agency;

-     principles and practices of leadership.                                                        

 

Skill in:

-        observing situations analytically and objectively, making sound judgements, and reacting quickly and calmly in emergencies;

-        managing difficult situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially;

-        performing defensive tactics which require quick reflexes, agility, coordination and strength;

-        understanding and following written and oral instructions;

-        gathering, analyzing, and evaluating facts and evidence;

-        preparing and maintaining records and reports;

-     establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer with Arizona POST and possession of a validArizona driver’s license.  Depending upon the needs of the City, some incumbents of the class may be required to demonstrate fluency in both Spanish and English as a condition of employment.
