SLPD’s Holiday Special Enforcement yields 4 DUI arrests

The San Luis Police Department participated in the national campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”, organized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

From December 22nd to January 1st the San Luis Police Department increased the number of officers patrolling the streets and highways within the City of San Luis. A sobriety checkpoint was also set up at the San Luis U.S. Port of Entry on New Year’s Eve.

The objective of this special operation was to improve highway safety during this holiday season by detecting and arresting drunk drivers as well as issuing citations for other traffic violations.

RESULTS:

Sobriety Checkpoint on December 31st

889 drivers were contacted

221 designated drivers were contacted

2 drivers were arrested for DUI

26 Traffic Citations were issued

1 driver was cited for driving with a suspended license

2 vehicles were impounded

1 person was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant (DUI)

4 persons were arrested for open container

7 persons were arrested for underage drinking

From December 22nd to December 30th

124 Traffic Citations were issued

8 drivers were cited for driving with a suspended license

6 vehicles were impounded

2 drivers were arrested for DUI

5 persons were arrested for open alcohol container

4 persons were arrested for underage drinking

“The fact that this detail yielded few DUI arrests shows that the community is becoming more cognizant of the results of drinking and driving. The number of designated drivers as opposed to drunk drivers was surprisingly high but definitely a positive result of DUI prevention campaigns”, said Police Chief Art Ramos.
