Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Component Meeting
Location of Event: 1090 E. Union Street City Hall
The San Luis Police hosted a Department of Homeland Security Component Meeting at the city hall’s training room on October 17, 2012. The meeting was administered by Rudy Escalante who is the DHS’s Community Relations Officer. Acting San Luis Police Chief Ramos also hosted the meeting along with his administrative staff. The meeting’s goal was to provide information to residents, community assistance agencies and other agencies attending of issues and changes involving the southwest region to include the ports of entry. It also gave clarification on what each agency does in the protection of its citizens and visitors and the areas they cover.
Attendees included U.S. Customs and Border Protection Southwest Port Director, Border Patrol Agent, Yuma Sector Border Patrol Deputy Chief, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air & Marine Supervisor, Homeland Security and Investigations Special Agent in charge. City of San Luis Councilmember Maria Ramos and Councilmember Joe Harper also attended the meeting. In addition, Supervisors from both San Luis Port of Entry I and II were present to answer questions from the public which focused mainly on advances made at the ports for traffic flow into the United States. Several San Luis Police Neighborhood Watch Committee Members were present and voiced their concerns regarding border issues. Attendees were given valuable information and contacts to have their concerns resolved and/or answered. This was the first of several DHS Component meetings, Mr. Escalante will be administering within the City of San Luis.
